Ontario's food bank network reports largest annual increase in clientele in history, with client numbers up 38% over the past year the last financial year.

According to Feed Ontario, more than 800,000 people used food banks in the province between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.

Visits totaled more than 5.9 million, an increase of 36% compared to the previous year.

The report states that 2 out of 5 users were new customers. This is an increase of 41% compared to the same period the previous year.

The clientele of Food banks in Ontario have been on the rise for seven years in a row, adds Feed Ontario.

Organization points to precarious work, erosion of social programs and lack of affordable housing as long-term factors , in addition to the most recent surge in the cost of living.
