In the local  newspaper of the American city of Mansfield from 1963 the first mention of smartphones was found, which were designed to “help housewives”. On this corresponding post on Reddit.

"In the future, you will be able to carry your phone in pocket", — says the title of the article. The illustration shows Jean Conrad of the telecom company Mansfield Telephone Co. holding a compact version of the phone. As follows from the caption to the photo, “the device is still in development.”

The article suggests using a smartphone for — housewives for example, if they are busy cooking and cannot go to stationary phone. Also, a compact device could act as an intercom for intercom.

It was reported that such gadgets would have a built-in camera to transmit an image, therefore in the article they are called "TV backgrounds".
