For the first time, a black woman was appointed master of royal music – one of the most famous British composers of our time, Errollin Wallen. She will write music for the royal family.
The corresponding decision was made by King Charles, appointing her instead of composer Judith Weir. This was reported in Buckingham Palace.
The master of royal music creates works for special royal events. The position has existed since 1626, when Charles I appointed Nicolas Lanier to it. This title is given to musicians who have made a significant contribution to the musical life of the nation.
I look forward to the opportunity to protect music and the art of music for all, – said Wallen, who is very happy to receive this royal appointment.
Errollyn Wallenwas born in Belize in 1958 and moved with her parents to the UK when she was two years old. A composer of orchestral, choral and chamber music, she has composed music for BBC Proms and international events including COP26 and the 2012 Paralympic Games.
She has also been commissioned to compose works for the Queen's Golden and Diamond Jubilees Elizabeth II. Wallen is a laureate of the British Composer Award, and was also awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2007 as part of the Queen's Birthday Honors and the same order in 2020 – for the New Year.
She has 22 operas to her credit, and many more orchestral, chamber and vocal works. In 1998, Wallen became the first black woman to compete in the BBC Proms and the first woman to win the Ivor Composers Award in classical music. Wallen will hold the position for the next 10 years, a fixed term was introduced in 2004.
