The 500 miles from Daytona took nine hours. A fire accident and sensational winner Michael McDowell ensured a spectacular finish.
Nothing for weak nerves! The famous 500 miles of Daytona were overshadowed by two serious accidents and an interruption lasting for hours.
The race decision was only made after nine (!) Hours. Outsider Michael McDowell (USA) pushed the leading drivers Brad Keselowski and Loey Logano out of the race on the last lap.
The race-decisive action led to further collisions, several cars went up in flames. For McDowell it was the very first win in his 358th Nascar race.
Mass crash at 300 km / h and severe storm
But it wasn’t just the finish that was exciting.
The 63rd edition of the motorsport classic had to be interrupted after 15 of a total of 200 laps. A mass accident at more than 300 kilometers per hour, in which a total of 16 vehicles were involved, and a subsequent storm with lightning, thunder and heavy rain made it impossible to continue driving.
Behind McDowell, Nascar Champion Chase Elliott (USA) and former Daytona 500 winner Austin Dillon (USA) finished second and third.
