In the contemporary Lecce (stra) wins the derby with Bari and its containers
In all its longitudinal extension, Puglia now has a tourist and festival offer that draws a territory rewarded by national and international presences. Such a diffusion of proposals only partially contemplates initiatives linked to art, not always up to the tourist appeal, distributed with asymmetrical capillarity in the individual provinces. For example, between Bari and Lecce: considering the variegated parterre of the subjects involved on the contemporary front, the Salento city plays a higher tier league, as for football. Outside the group are those exhibitions, in Bari as in Otranto, from Steve McCurry to Banksy, appreciated by the general public, made up of “turnkey” circuits, released from organic programming. The difference, rather, must be identified in a system that, in the Salento area marked by small and large events capable of originating virtuous references between operators and attracting investment flows. Above all in Lecce, in addition to galleries with vigilant gazes towards research scenarios, there are private foundations, such as the newborn Biscozzi-Rimbaud, inaugurated this year after the restoration of the historic building that houses it. From July 24th there will also be a fair, Palai, with ten international galleries housed in Palazzo Tamborino Cezzi on which the very active Pia association orbits. The work of the museums, Must and Castromediano, is also profitable, with schedules not only for Apulian artists. And incisive public art events in the province. The Capitanata langue while Taranto, already positively marked by the Crac exhibition projects, begins to equip itself, radiating, starting from its Marta, a series of events in which the art of the present is wisely linked to the collection.
Contradictions in the shadow of St. Nicholas
In the metropolitan city, the fabric becomes looser with some exceptions, the Pascali Foundation in Polignano a Mare, but with obvious gaps in Bari. qualitative level and visibility in the national and international art system. In any case, the tourist in transit is given points of excellence with the reborn Archaeological Museum of Santa Scolastica in dialogue with the contemporary, but little else. To move to the high-end championship, Bari will have to strengthen a purchasing campaign aimed at setting the contents and objectives of its restored spaces. If filled with original ideas and not only with episodic appointments, if governed by non-improvised management, they will contribute to enliven the offer and to shape that induced by which art is nourished.
