The potential of quantum computers for science and business is enormous. Now the US group IBM, which is the leader in this area, has placed the first such system in Europe!
The system was presented on Tuesday at the IT company’s German headquarters in Ehningen. It is to be used in the next few years to further research quantum technology. In addition, the high-performance computer is intended to build nationwide competencies in business and science and thus create international competitive advantages.
Europe’s most powerful quantum computer
According to IBM, this is “Europe’s most powerful quantum computer in an industrial context”. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) described the quantum computer in a video message as a “marvel of technology”. Germany ranks among the world leaders in quantum technology research. The goal now is to make use of these research results “as quickly as possible” for economic applications. The facility in Ehningen can help decisively in this regard.
IBM is a leader in this field alongside US competitor Google. According to IBM, the quantum computer has been in Germany since November, and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has been working with the system since February. The official presentation of the computer was only now due to the Corona crisis.
With quantum computers, research and industry are reacting to the fact that the development of high-performance computers that has been common up to now is reaching its physical limits. Quantum computers can theoretically be many times more powerful than conventional computers, so they can perform more complex tasks than conventional systems in a shorter time.
