Fabio Quartararo fills the gap: second win in a row in Jerez

From the photo album left by the first MotoGP race, before the multiple images of Marc Márquez's fall, there was a snapshot that served as a summary of the World Championship: on the grid, Márquez himself looked to his left with fire in his eyes, with his spirits alight, with all his fury. There he was waiting for the exit of a boy, Fabio Quartararo , which is the future, it is already clear.

If in the first part of Márquez's career, his rivals were his childhood idols, those legends, Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedros a, in the second part that begins this season his main adversary will be the French who is so precocious like him, as daring as him, as talented as him. This Sunday Quartararo reconfirmed it. In the absence of Márquez due to his right humerus injury, the 21-year-old Yamaha satellite team rider added his second consecutive victory at Jerez and extended his championship lead to 10 points over second, Maverick Viñales .

His victory was written as quickly as Márquez's best victories, with just one move, nothing more. Unlike a week ago, Quartararo nailed the start, took the lead in the first corner and only received one attack: Viñales tried to pass him and signed his sentence. In the frustrated overtaking, Viñales was passed by Valentino Rossi and was already behind him until, with two laps remaining, he managed to regain second place. But then it was too late to fight for victory. Then Quartararo already had eight seconds of advantage.

With his second success, the Frenchman, who triumphed in the Spanish Speed Championship (CEV) and then went through Moto3 and Moto2 without pain or glory, showed that he is prepared to be the main obstacle to the title for Márquez. The rest of the candidates disappointed, Viñales suffered the unspeakable for being second, Andrea Dovizioso settled for sixth place and several strong youngsters, such as Francesco Bagnaia or Franco Morbidelli , suffered breakdowns.

“It was very hard because of the heat. I tested the tires in the warm up and that worked very well for me in the race. From the beginning I found the rhythm and the truth is that I felt very fast. I guess my family will have already started drinking to celebrate it “, declared Quartararo after being congratulated by an euphoric Rossi, on the podium almost a year later, and before going up to celebrate with him and Viñales.

Now the challenge for Quartararo is to maintain his high level against Marc Márquez, who already beat him last year in several duels, and on not so favorable circuits. The calendar, yes, favors him: now comes Brno, which has historically favored the Yamaha, then Spielberg and Misano, where last season he already got on the podium, and then Montmeló, the track where he celebrated his only Moto2 victory .
