On the day of the Exaltation of the Cross, they remember the discovery of the Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. It happened in 326 near Mount Calvary in Jerusalem. Since the 7th century, this day also marks the return of the Life-giving Cross from Persia by the Byzantine emperor Heraclius. The holiday is called the Exaltation of the Cross, because both when the Cross was found and when it was returned, the priests raised (“raised”) the cross three times so that everyone could see it. holy places for Christians in Palestine and to find the Cross on which the Savior was crucified. His mother, Tsarina Elena, undertook to fulfill the king's wishes.

In 326, Queen Elena went to Jerusalem for this purpose. She made a lot of efforts to find the Cross of Christ, because the enemies hid it underground. Finally, Elena was pointed to an old Jew who knew where the Lord's Cross was. After long inquiries and persuasions, he told that the holy thing is in a cave, covered with garbage and earth, and above it stands a pagan temple. The queen ordered the destruction of this building and the excavation of the cave.

Konstantin and Elena they found a cross

When they dug up the cave, they found three crosses and a tablet with the inscription: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. It was necessary to find out which of the three crosses belonged to Jesus. The Patriarch (Bishop) of Jerusalem Makarios and Queen Elena firmly believed and hoped that God would point to the Holy Cross of the Savior.

In this way, they recognized the Cross of the Lord, through which the Lord performed a miracle. Therefore, the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles kings Constantine and Helen built a large temple in honor of the Resurrection of Christ over the place of suffering, burial and resurrection of Jesus.
