Europeans: early party for Brits, with some tension – ANSA

(ANSA) – LONDON, 11 JUL – Early party and some first excesses on the streets of London – around the stadium as well as in the areas reserved for fans for viewing from giant screens in the heart of the capital and elsewhere – in the hours before the final between Italy and England of Euro2020. Many crowded scenes have been filmed, for example in the surroundings of Leicester Square or Trafalgar Square, where the home team fans are gathering in large numbers, regardless of any precautions whatsoever on distancing or other precautions against Covid despite the infections fueled by the Delta variant. And with beers and other spirits that have been flowing for hours already. The climate is one of great optimism, bordering on presumption, between chants in chorus and invocations to the mantra of a football that would be destined to “go home” to the country where it was born as a modern sport. “It’s coming home”, almost all repeat obsessively. However, there is also the presence here and there of squads of Italians residing in the Kingdom with the tricolor symbols. And not even some first fibrillation, albeit at the moment episodic and without serious consequences reported. The media report some verbal abuse directed by mostly tipsy whites, and witnesses say they saw at least a couple of small groups throwing objects or stones not far from Wembley: in one case in the direction of people identified as Italian fans.
