EU foreign representative for new sanctions against Russia

In the tense relations between the EU and Russia, the EU foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell wants to propose new sanctions against Moscow. It was up to the EU states to decide on the next step, said Borrell in the EU Parliament on Tuesday. “But yes, that could include sanctions.” He will use the external commissioner’s right of initiative and submit concrete proposals. <a href=”https://www.de24.news/”><img class=”alignnone size-medium” src=”https://www.de24.news/a1/de24.png” alt=”© www.de24.news” width=”400″ height=”20″ /></a><p>&nbsp;The&nbsp; foreign ministers of the EU states will discuss the issue on February 22nd. </p><div>

Borrell traveled to Moscow last week to demand the release of Russian Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny – unsuccessfully. Now he drew a sobering balance sheet of the trip. He had no illusions beforehand, but was now even more worried. “<a href=”https://www.de24.news/”><img class=”alignnone size-medium” src=”https://www.de24.news/a1/de24.png” alt=”© www.de24.news” width=”400″ height=”20″ /></a><p>&nbsp;The&nbsp; Russian government is going down a worrying authoritarian path,” said Borrell. <a href=”https://www.de24.news/”><img class=”alignnone size-medium” src=”https://www.de24.news/a1/de24.png” alt=”© www.de24.news” width=”400″ height=”20″ /></a><p>&nbsp;The&nbsp; space for civil society and freedom of expression is getting smaller and smaller. <a href=”https://www.de24.news/”><img class=”alignnone size-medium” src=”https://www.de24.news/a1/de24.png” alt=”© www.de24.news” width=”400″ height=”20″ /></a><p>&nbsp;The&nbsp;re seems to be almost no room for the development of democratic alternatives. <a href=”https://www.de24.news/”><img class=”alignnone size-medium” src=”https://www.de24.news/a1/de24.png” alt=”© www.de24.news” width=”400″ height=”20″ /></a><p>&nbsp;The&nbsp; visit confirmed the trend that Russia is moving away from the EU.</p>

The  discussion with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was heated when he asked for Navalny’s release, said Borrell. It had become clear that Russia did not want to participate in a constructive exchange when the EU addressed human rights and political freedoms. “We are at a crossroads in relations with Russia,” said Borrell.

It was previously announced that Nawalny’s confidants said they were speaking with representatives of the EU countries about possible sanctions against high-ranking Russian officials and confidants of President Vladimir Putin. Leonid Volkov wrote on the Telegram online service on Monday evening that a “package of personal sanctions” had been discussed.

The  measures concern “the closest circle of supporters of Vladimir Putin”.

Specifically, Volkov named the oligarchs Roman Abramowitsch and Alisher Usmanow, the television presenter Vladimir Soloviow, the banker Andrei Kostine and the former high government official Igor Chuvalov as the target of possible punitive measures.

Sharp criticism came immediately from the Russian Foreign Ministry. Ministry spokeswoman Maria Sakharova told Vesti FM on Tuesday that Volkov and Ashurkov had “committed treason from a moral and ethical point of view”.

The  opposition had spoken to representatives of states that see Russia “either as an opponent or enemy or as an aggressor”. Lower House Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said Parliament was considering a new law to allow prosecution of people who call for new sanctions against Russia.

The  Polish delegation to the EU confirmed a video conference call with Volkov and Ashurkov. “

The  permanent representatives of the 27 as well as the ambassadors of the USA, Great Britain, Canada and Ukraine are now discussing the next steps,” said the delegation on the online service Twitter.

Since the arrest of Nawalny on January 17th, the EU had requested his release several times. She accuses Moscow of failing to investigate the poisoning of the Kremlin critic last August and imposed sanctions on several Russian officials because of the attack.

Navalny was treated in Germany after the poison attack, for which he blames the Russian government. Last Tuesday, a Moscow court sentenced him to three years in a penal colony on the basis of a 2014 suspended sentence.

Tens of thousands of people recently took to the streets in Russia for Navalny’s release and against Putin. Volkov announced further protests for Sunday, this time in a new form to keep the police away.

The  Navalny supporters should gather in front of their houses and turn on their mobile phone lights, as he explained.
