US Senate acquits Trump in impeachment proceedings
Berlin (dpa) – EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides rejects the ongoing criticism of the vaccine procurement by the European Union as unjustified. “
The European vaccination strategy is a success,” said the Christian Democratic politician from Cyprus of the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Monday).
Ten months ago no one believed that effective and safe vaccines would be available so quickly. “So it is wrong to say that we only made mistakes.” She went on to say that without the EU, citizens in all 27 Member States, regardless of size and economic strength, would likely not have had access to vaccines.
Kyriakides also announced a fast-track process for cases where approved vaccines need to be adapted to virus variants. Improved vaccines would no longer have to go through the entire approval process. “It will be faster to have suitable vaccines available without compromising on safety.”
Kyriakides announced that by the end of June, 300 million doses of the three previously approved vaccines would be available to more than a third of EU citizens. “That number could even increase if the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is added.” She concluded: “Despite all the obstacles, we have wasted no time.”
Above all in Germany, but also in other EU countries, there had been criticism of the sluggish vaccination start and the delivery difficulties of individual manufacturers in recent weeks. This week, the EU Commission head Ursula von der Leyen again admitted failures due to the lack of corona vaccine and announced corrections. She wants to accelerate the approval of vaccines and expand production in Europe.
