Estonian developers created the THeMIS combat robot for the Ukrainian Defense Forces

The Estonian company Milrem Robotics, part of the EDGE Group, plans to supply more than 200 THeMIS robotic platforms for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by the end of 2025. This was announced by Director of Industrial Partnerships Paul Clayton, noting that these unmanned ground vehicles will perform reconnaissance, cargo transportation and combat operations, Defense Express informs.

THeMIS from Milrem Robotics — is a modern unmanned tracked platform that changes the approach to combat operations and infantry support. Developed in Estonia, this machine is capable of performing a wide range of tasks: from transporting cargo and evacuating the wounded to reconnaissance and direct participation in combat operations.

Thanks to the hybrid diesel-electric power plant, THeMIS can operate for up to 15 hours without refueling, and its range reaches 90 kilometers. The tracked chassis provides high cross-country ability, allowing the machine to overcome difficult terrain, climb slopes of up to 60% and cross sides up to 60 centimeters high. The maximum speed of the platform — 25 km/h, which makes it mobile and effective even in dynamic combat conditions.

THeMIS can operate in a fully autonomous mode or be remotely controlled by an operator at a distance of up to 2.5 kilometers. Integrated artificial intelligence systems allow the platform to analyze the environment, recognize objects and even accompany military units in the «follow the leader» mode.

Special attention should be paid to the various modifications of THeMIS. For example, the Cargo version is capable of carrying ammunition and equipment weighing up to 1,200 kg, reducing the burden on soldiers. The Medevac model ensures the rapid evacuation of the wounded from dangerous areas, and the ISR variant performs reconnaissance missions, equipped with cameras and sensors. In addition, there is a combat version, the Combat, which can carry machine guns, anti-tank missile systems and other weapons. As of 2022, Ukraine has been using at least 15 THeMIS platforms for medical evacuation, logistics and demining. In 2023, Milrem Robotics signed an agreement with Ukroboronprom to jointly develop new robotic combat systems based on the experience gained in the war against the Russian occupiers. The new versions of THeMIS are expected to have anti-tank, reconnaissance and engineering modifications. The company has expanded its production capacity, increasing the production of platforms to 500 units per year, which allows to fulfill orders on time.
