Liverpool v Arsenal: should we expect goals?
Three days after a brilliant battle in the Premier League, Liverpool and Arsenal will face off on October 1 in 1/8 of the League Cup – our forecast for this match.
After losing on penalties in the English Super Cup , Liverpool have had a four-win streak in a row. The Reds confidently walked through all the matches, barely beating only Leeds in the first round (4: 3). Then Liverpool put on the ball by removing Chelsea (2: 0), in the League Cup they left no stone unturned from Lincoln (7: 2), and in the last round they dealt with Arsenal beautifully (3: 1) … All this allows us to think that the Merseysiders are in perfect order.
However, Liverpool’s League Cup under Jurgen Klopp is less serious. In his first years of work, the German tried to fight for this trophy. But when he discovered that because of this the team had a too busy calendar in December, he began to put up a semi-reserve squad for the game. However, Liverpool’s bench now looks more powerful than it has ever been in this century.
The last time Liverpool reached the League Cup final was in 2016, losing on penalties to Manchester City. In 2017 and 2018, the Reds were eliminated in the first round, and last season they reached the quarterfinals, where they lost to Aston Villa (0: 5).
It is noteworthy that at the same stage of the 1/8 finals, Liverpool passed just Arsenal. The main time in that match ended with a score of 5: 5. The players of the youth team, diluted by the veterans of the club, played.
Not available from Liverpool for this match are Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip and coronavirus-infected Thiago Alcantara.
Arsenal started the season well too. The Gunners are prettier than any other top-six team apart from Liverpool. Moreover, it was the “red” wards of Mikel Arteta who won the English Super Cup, having won the second title with the Spaniard. After that, Arsenal beat Fulham (3: 0) and West Ham (2: 1) in the Premier League, and Leicester (2: 0) went away in the League Cup.
The Gunners suffered their first defeat in the new season precisely in the last match against Liverpool. Arsenal began to play with Arteta in a collected and disciplined manner .
In the League Cup, the Gunners did not catch any special stars from the sky, having won the tournament for the last time before Arsene Wenger arrived. However, in 2018, Arsenal reached the final of the competition, where they lost to Manchester City (0: 3).
For the away match against Leicester, Arsenal put up a far from optimal squad, which is probably to be expected in the duel with Liverpool. However, the Gunners will definitely try to win the match. Firstly, to beat the champion of the country, and secondly, success in any competition is extremely important for the club now.
Arsenal have seven players in the infirmary: Emil Smith Rowe, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Cedric Soares, Pablo Marie, Calum Chambers and Gabriel Martinelli.
Liverpool’s winning streak has reached four official matches.
The Reds have not lost in regulation time at Anfield Road since September 2018. This is already 49 official matches in a row.
In six of the eight past official meetings of the Merseysides, the bet “total over 2.5” was played.
Arsenal have won five of their previous seven official matches.
In the same amount of fights (five out of seven) of the “Gunners” for the indicated period, the bet “total over 2.5” played.
In all eight past meetings between these teams, the bet “both will score” played.
The clubs will play for the third time this season. In the English Super Cup, Liverpool and Arsenal were separated in regulation time by the world (1: 1), and the Reds won the championship (3: 1).
08/29/20 Arsenal Liverpool 6: 5
15.07.20 Arsenal Liverpool 2: 1
10/30/19 Liverpool Arsenal 10: 9
08.24.19 Liverpool Arsenal 3: 1
12/29/18 Liverpool Arsenal 5: 1
03.11.18 Arsenal Liverpool eleven
12/22/17 Arsenal Liverpool 3: 3
08/27/17 Liverpool Arsenal 4: 0
03/04/17 Liverpool Arsenal 3: 1
08/14/16 Arsenal Liverpool 3: 4
If in the championship the victory of Liverpool looked quite predictable, in the League Cup there are already more doubts about the final success of the Reds. Obviously, both coaches will set up far from optimal lineups, which will probably lead to a large number of goals in both directions. Especially if Liverpool doesn’t have Van Dyck in the center of defense.
Our forecast – both will score + total over 2.5 for 1.90 in BC Winline
