Emmanuel Macron reopens World War I weapons factory: what products will it produce

French president calls for sustained efforts to expand arms production after Russian invasion to Ukraine.

On Thursday, April 11, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the reconstruction of the old powder factory, which was dismantled in 2007 due to the lack of a sufficient number of orders. This enterprise in the city of Bergerac supplied gunpowder as early as the First World War.

As France24 reports, the French president called for sustained efforts to expand weapons production after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“In the long term, we are witnessing geopolitical and geostrategic changes in which the defense industry will play an increasingly important role”, — he said.

Macron emphasized that the restoration of the gunpowder factory is urgent and necessary for the supply of artillery shells to Ukraine.

“We must be fast, go hard, mass produce”, — he added.

Eurenco, which is a leading European supplier of gunpowder and explosives, is to open a plant in Bergerac in 2025 and produce 1,200 tons of products a year. The received orders are enough for uninterrupted work until 2030.
