The US Secret Service has launched an investigation into Elon Musk's post on X, in which he allegedly “joked” about possible assassination attempts on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Bloomberg reports.
On Sunday, September 15, shortly after the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, an X account called DogeDesigner asked, “Why are they trying to kill Donald Trump?”
Musk responded to his 198 million followers, “And no one is even trying to kill Biden/Kamala,” adding a smiley face emoji to the end of the post. Musk later deleted the post after it was widely condemned, claiming it was a joke. But the message was seen by tens of millions, including the Secret Service.

Threatening the president or vice president of the United States is a crime that can result in a significant fine or up to five years in prison.
“The agency is aware of Elon Musk's social media posting. We generally do not comment on matters related to protective intelligence work. However, we can say that the Secret Service investigates all threats involving people under our protection.” said Secret Service spokesman Nate Herring.
On Monday, Musk attempted to explain his tweet and why he deleted it.
“Well, one lesson I've learned is that just because I say something to a group of people and they laugh, doesn't mean it's also going to look funny when posted on X,” he wrote.
