Effectively shooting down helicopters and not only: 3 interesting MANPADS of Ukraine

In order to effectively defend against the enemy, Ukraine needs not only air defense equipment for covering cities, but also more portable models. Ukraine uses several portable anti-aircraft missile systems, among them three can be singled out: the Soviet “Holka” MANPADS; and two foreign ones.

MANPADS FIM-92 Stinger and MANPADS Mistral are named among the five best portable anti-aircraft missile systems in the world. They were both handed over to Ukraine by allies.

MANPADS FIM-92 Stinger

FIM MANPADS -92 Stinger – this is a “fire and forget” type rocket; manufactured by Raytheon Missile Systems. The missile moves at a speed of 750 m/s and can hit targets at an altitude of up to 3,500 m and a radius of 8,000 m/s. MANPADS are effective against low-flying aircraft, helicopters and even cruise missiles.

This missile system has a proven hit rate of 97% and a similar “fire-and-forget” principle of action, which is provided by a homing head. MANPADS has a thermal sight, it can be connected to the fire control and coordination system. The rocket moves at a speed of 930 m/s. The defeat zone is up to 6,000 m at an altitude of up to 3,000 m. In the new model, the range is increased to 8 km. iframe width=”560″ height=”314″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/jmAVXuI6mPY” allowfullscreen=”allowfullscreen”>

Portable anti-aircraft missile complex “Holka” remained in the Armed Forces since Soviet times. This MANPADS is effective against airplanes and helicopters and has proven it many times. The Ukrainian military was also able to shoot down several enemy missiles in the sky. Target hitting range – up to 5200 m. Target height – up to 2500 m. The rocket flies at a speed of 600 m/s.
