The Ecuadorian National Police has detained 2,177 people since November 1 of this year, when President Guillermo Lasso decreed a state of emergency for the provinces of Guayas, Esmeraldas and SantoSunday after a series of car bombings and attacks on community police units that left six police officers murdered.

The state of emergency established by the president will be in force until December 15 and includes a curfew between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., as a security measure to restore peace in the provinces where the decree governs.

The Minister of the Interior, Juan Zapata, informed that, according to the latest balance made by the central government, the public force has carried out 41,611 operations that allowed the review and registration of 317,000 people and 283,000 vehicles.

In an interview with Infobae, Lasso said that he spoke with US President Joe Biden about the need for the United States to contribute financially to the fight against drug trafficking: “what I have told President Biden is that we have to share the bill because a small country with few resources Since Ecuador cannot assume all the economic cost that the fight against drug trafficking implies, we must give it up and we will continue it,” said Lasso, who held the aforementioned conversation during the Summit of the Americas, held last June.

With this background, the Ecuadorian government wants the United States to donate USD 5,000 millionto finance the comprehensive security strategy promoted by the administration of Guillermo Lasso. The Ecuadorian president has been emphatic that this amount is required to combat drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.

Diego Ordóñez, head of the National Secretariat for Public and State Security, he assured, in an interview with Ecuavisa , that the government has been managing these funds with the United States for more than a year. According to Ordóñez, the proposal for financing and support to equip the public forces was delivered to the Department of Defense, the United States Southern Command and the Department of State.

The purpose of this cooperation is that both the National Police and the Armed Forces “have sufficient capacities to be able to face the levels of crime.” Recently, President Guillermo Lasso indicated that the Air Force barely has 3 aircraft

According to sources from the Ministry of Defense to Infobae, the Armed Forces do not operate at their maximum capacity because they do not have the necessary resources. The estimate would be that the Ecuadorian military operates at 25% of its total capacity.

Also, last week, a delegation of Israeli experts was in Ecuador to cooperate on security matters with the Armed Forces and the National Police. The objective of the delegation was to guide the members of the public force in the elaboration of a plan for the acquisition of security equipment.
