The 2020 US Open champion returned after a difficult recovery, but bowed out in his debut after losing to Carreño.

He did not have the best result in return to the US Open. Dominic Thiem returned to the North American tournament after receiving an invitation letter, but did not make it past the first round. Pablo Carreño beat the Austrian in his debut.

The Spanish tennis player beat the 20202 champion 7-5, 6-1, 5-7 and 6-3 Carreño knocked down a Thiem, who was returning to the US Open after undergoing a process of profound involution that made him drop to position 211 in the world ranking.

He needed three hours and 18 minutes to prolong his journey, in a day in which the tenis spanish also registered the triumph of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and the defeats of Roberto Bautista and Bernabé Zapata.

Carreño achieved the first victory of his career against Thiem after losing the previous seven clashes, including one in 2016 precisely in New York.

The one in Gijón , champion this year in Montreal, continued his path in a tournament in which he was a semifinalist in 2020, when he surrendered to the German Alexander Zverev and lost the opportunity to face Thiem precisely in the final.

In the next round, Carreño will face the winner of the match between the Kazakh Alexander Bublik and the Frenchman Hugo Gaston.

The US Open takes place from Monday to September 11 in New York, with the Russian Daniil Medvedev defending the title.

The Spaniards Rafa Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Paula Badosa and Garbiñe Muguruza will debut this Tuesday, in a tournament in which Serbian Novak Djokovic and German Alexander Zverev are absent.
