A canine unit, the only one of its kind in the United States and in the world, was launched at Miami International Airport. They are trained to detect covid-19 in people.

The unit is made up of two dogs named Cobra and OneBetta who, for 30 days, will participate in a pilot program with employees of the air terminal

The intention of the pilot tests is to verify the effectiveness of the canine binomial to detect the disease in those who transit through the airport

The dogs were trained by specialists from Florida International University (FIU) to sniff out the virus with protocols developed by the Global Forensic and Justice Center (Gfjc).

The FIU said in a statement that “backed by decades of science, dogs can detect the virus with 97% accuracy,” as demonstrated in a published study.

OneBetta and Cobra have already had positive alerts during the fiscal year with employees. At the time of detecting the person, the staff ask him to undergo a rapid test for covid-19 to confirm it.

How do they operate?

In the exercise shown to the media, the dogs smelled various masks. At the time of detecting the one that was contaminated with the virus, as with other procedures, the animal sat in front of the infected person to inform its caregiver

During the presentation, Miami-Dade County Commissioner José «Pepe» Díaz told CBS that it is fortunate «to have the first covid detection dogs (…) it is the first airport in the world to use this type of technology on our four-legged friends »

If it works, the program could be expanded to train more dogs and, as expected, to be used by passengers passing through the Miami airport.

The pilot program involves having trained dogs sniff people’s masks to determine if someone has coronavirus.

The plan will last one month, it is established only in one of the employee checkpoints in the terminal American Airlines and does not include passengers.
