A Miramichi man was sentenced to prison Tuesday for willfully failing to provide water, food, shelter and necessary care for your dog.

Bernard Bouchard received a 45-day prison sentence which he will serve in his home, a ban on owning animals for 20 years, restitution to be paid of $821 and #x27;a fine of $500, reports the New Brunswick SPCA.

Hugo Bouchard, who was also prosecuted, was fined of $500 and will not be able to own pets for 20 years.

The organization filed a complaint against the owners in June 2022. The SPCA received a report during that month of a neglected dog who appeared to have been chained all its life, writes the SPCA.

According to the association, the animal was dirty, very thin and had lost fur and its chain was buried in its neck. At the time, the animal's owners agreed to surrender their dog to the SPCA.

Renamed Link, the dog underwent emergency surgery to have the chain removed, and he received several treatments allowing him to regain his strength, the organization reports. He has since found a new home.

The New Brunswick SPCA congratulates in a press release the excellent work of the animal protection officers who allowed this conviction.

Link is a very serious case of animal cruelty. The sentence imposed by the judge in this case should serve as a reminder to pet owners that if you don't take care of your animals, you risk facing serious consequences, said Tony Porter, chief of animal protection at the New Brunswick SPCA.

The organization notes that calls for concerns about animal welfare have increased sharply in recent years. Between 2020 and 2023, serious cases of animal cruelty increased by 62%.
