US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk might not know that Canada has a king.
Charles III speaks to Canada not as the head of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but as the sovereignty of Canada, as an independent state, said in a comment to Gazeta.ua Doctor of Philosophy Olexandr Brodetsky.
The role of the monarch in the Canadian political system is different from that of the United Kingdom. But in certain emergency situations, the monarch may have real power, Brodetsky emphasized.
“Do Trump and Musk know that in emergency cases, the constitutional monarch may not exercise real power with an exception? His prerogatives of power and force are, in theory, decisive,” said the doctor of philosophy.
He emphasized the need to respond to populist statements, even if they have no serious basis:
“Even if these statements by Trump and Musk are only populist, they cannot be left without a reaction. And it would be good if the monarch reacted,” he emphasized scientist.
The same applies to Greenland, which is under the sovereignty of the Danish Crown.
“Already now, the King of Denmark Frederick X has changed the country's coat of arms, more clearly expressing the symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands – respectively, the image of a polar bear and a ram,” noted Oleksandr Brodetsky.
In the Canadian legal system, each law begins with an indication that it is adopted by the king. Even if this is done through the will of Parliament.
“At the beginning of every Canadian law there is an indication that it is adopted (even through the will of Parliament) by the King. It is the monarch who is also the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, who is directly represented in this role by the Governor General of Canada (currently Governor General Mary Simon. – Gazeta.ua),” Brodetsky noted.
