Day of Dignity and Freedom: 10 Songs of the Revolution That Give You Goosebumps

Main Songs of the Revolution of Dignity/moemisto

On November 21, 2024, Ukraine celebrates the eleventh anniversary of the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity. Music helped protesters in Kyiv and across the country get through this difficult time. We remember the iconic songs of the Revolution!

Radio MAXIMUM collected the most famous songs of that period. Some of them were “born by the revolution”, some existed for a long time, but on the Maidan they received a completely new meaning. Listen – and from the first chords the memories will come by themselves.

Ukrainian national anthem

The national anthem of Ukraine became the main song of the Revolution of Dignity. It was sung on the Maidan, in the subway, at train stations, and in minibuses. It was sung in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and other Euromaidans. Insightful and powerful words of our famous man once again united Ukraine.

Lyapis Trubetskoi – “Warriors of the world”

Who is talking about the oppression of Russian speakers in Ukraine? Here you have chess and checkmate. It was the Russian-language song of the Belarusian band “Lyapis Trubetskoi” that became almost the most important anthem of the Revolution of Dignity. The leader of the band, Serhiy Mikhalok, immediately denied the connection between the song and the events in Ukraine, because it was written a year before the Maidan. Nevertheless, “barricades, friends, noise, hum” – all this is about our struggle.

Kozak System – “Brother for Brother”

Another unofficial Maidan anthem from Ukrainian rockers “Kozak System”. The band released this song in the summer of 2013, the lyrics were written by Sashko Polozhinsky. With “Brother for Brother”, the musicians were supposed to perform at the match between Wladimir Klitschko and the Russian Alexander Povetkin, but at the last moment, Klitschko refused this song and entered the ring to the traditional “Can't Stop” from the Red Hot Chili Pappers.

< However, "Brother for Brother" got another chance: on the night of December 1, without preparation and rehearsals, Kozak System, Taras Chubai, Serhiy Fomenko, Maria Burmaka, Oleg Sobchuk, Anzhelika Rudnytska, Olena Grozovska, Eduard Prystupa, Ruslana Lyzhichko, Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, Antin Mukharsky and other Ukrainian stars performed this song together in support of the Maidan.

Sviatoslav Vakarchuk – “Stina”, “Vstavai”

New and old hits of “Okean” sounded on the Maidan. And Svyatoslav Vakarchuk himself took part in the Revolution. In particular, one of the most thrilling moments of Euromaidan was December 14, 2013: then “OE” in its “golden” lineup performed on the Maidan stage in front of an audience of three hundred thousand.

We will never be brothers

The poem “We will never be brothers” was written by the 23-year-old poet Anastasia Dmytruk during the most difficult events of the Maidan – the shootings. Immediately after its publication, the work “started to live its own life” in social networks, collecting thousands of shares. Apparently, it was thanks to this that the Lithuanian musicians who decided to support Ukraine and recorded the song “We will never be brothers” learned about the poem.

Artisto – “Revolution Ukraine”

If you didn't recognize this song by the title, please turn on the video. This peculiar cover of the Ukrainian anthem by the young rapper from Lviv, Artisto, quickly gained popularity on the Maidan. Simple but true words conveyed all the aspirations of Ukrainians

Michael Schur – Guitar Breakdown

We could not ignore the song by journalist Michael Shchur (Roman Vintoniv). Michael wrote “Guitar Bust” back in July, but it was during the events on the Maidan that this track about Yanukovych became extremely relevant. “Your Son's Business”, “Rush from Ostrich Skin”, “Mezhyhirya” – this is a bust, Viktor, this is a guitar bust!”.

A tire burned

Maidan not only sang the songs of musicians, but also created its own hits. “The Burning Tire” emerged as a result of superimposing a new, topical text on the folk song “The Burning Pine”. Protecting themselves from the shots of the “Berkut” with paving stones, barricades, and burning tires, Maidan activists sang: “The burning tire, burning, there was a barricade… it didn't let wild dogs in…”

Following the composition “The Burning Tire”, another version of the folk song appeared – “The Burning Barrel”.

Yarmak ft. Tof – Hey 22

Rapper Yarmak, who was previously considered pro-Russian, impressed Ukrainians with the track “22”. The performer of the hit “Serdtse patsana” spent days and nights on the Maidan. It is symbolic that Sasha is also the same age as Nezalezhnosti. His song about Ukraine is deeply moving:

The Duck Is Swimming

Ukraine paid a very high price for the victory on Maidan – with the lives of the patriots of the Heavenly Hundred. The pain and longing of Ukrainians were embodied in the Lemko folk song “The Duck Is Swimming”. To it, the Heroes were seen off on their final journey. It's impossible to listen to this song without tears now…
