Disagreements are intensifying between China and Russia regarding the settlement of the war in Ukraine – ISW

Analysts of the US Institute for the Study of War believe , that the peace talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, showed that differences between China and Russia are intensifying regarding the settlement of the war in Ukraine. The latest ISW report also highlighted the Financial Times report, according to which the Chinese representatives were “constructive” during the meeting. and sought to show that China – "this is not Russia".

Moreover, the Chinese delegation expressed readiness to participate in the next meeting of this format. It will probably also take place without the participation of Russia – on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

Also, ISW, referring to Russian sources, emphasizes that the Kremlin rejected not only the Ukrainian peace formula, but also the proposal of the PRC, which includes 12 points, and which the Chinese delegation re-presented during the meeting in Jeddah. Meanwhile, the Chinese elite, according to an insider,  secretly expresses dissatisfaction with the actions of the Russian authorities aimed at settling the situation in Ukraine.

"Reports from negotiations in Saudi Arabia and insider statements, if they are true , are consistent with ISW's previous assessments that China is not fully in solidarity with Russia on the issue of Ukraine and that the relationship between Russia and China is not an “unrestricted partnership” as the Kremlin wants, ISW concluded.

Let us remind you that from August 5 to 6, negotiations regarding the Ukrainian peace formula were held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They were attended by high-ranking officials and diplomats from about 40 countries, including India and China. Russia was not invited there, because the task of this meeting is to distribute the points of the Ukrainian peace formula among the participating countries.
