(New York) Jack Hughes contributed to his team’s three goals in the second period with a brace and an assist, Mackenzie Blackwood turned back 47 shots and the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 Tuesday evening.
Miles Wood also contributed to this victory by scoring a goal and adding an assist. Travis Zajac completed for the Devils (2-0-1) who have earned at least one point in the standings in each of their outings so far.
Dispatched in front of the Devils’ goals for a third straight game, Blackwood made seven saves in the first twenty and 20 in each of the following two periods.
He came five saves close to matching his personal career high, achieved last season.
Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad beat Blackwood in power-play. Filip Chytil also hit the target for Rangers while Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox collected two assists apiece.
Alexis Lafrenière was held to check for a third straight game and remains on the hunt for his first career NHL point.
Alexandar Georgiev made a second straight start for the Rangers, after his shutout against the New York Islanders on Saturday night.
He was the victim of four goals on 20 shots in two periods of play. Igor Shesterkin replaced him early in the third period and blocked all eight shots he faced.
The Rangers tried to tie the game late in the third period by striking out Shesterkin in favor of a sixth forward, with about three minutes left, while the Devils played short of a man. Blackwood and his teammates held on.
