Despite the new ceramic coating, iPhone 16 smartphone models are vulnerable to drops

The latest models iPhone 16  from Apple are equipped with the second-generation Ceramic Shield material , which Apple says is even stronger than the previous generation Ceramic Shield. Device insurance provider Allstate Protection Plans today released the results of its annual device drop test, giving us insight into the durability of the new iPhones.

Allstate tested iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is Apple's largest iPhone to date at 6.9 inches. It still has a glass front and back, and while Apple has introduced a better Ceramic Shield material that's infused with ceramic for durability, it's still no match for concrete pavement.

Using "DropBot" to simulate a six-foot drop, Allstate conducted several tests. During the front-down drop test, the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ The Max crashed, and there were visible scratches along the titanium frame. This drop resulted in the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max will become unusable, although tactile responses are still felt, so it can be repaired.

During the drop test, the back glass ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ The Max crashed after one drop and damaged the camera body. It did remain functional, including the camera, but it was dangerous to hold with bare hands due to the broken glass.

No smartphone with glass has survived Allstate's DropBot, so it's no surprise that the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max fails. Glass and hard surfaces don't mix, so it's a good idea to have some kind of protection plan, like AppleCare + or a protective case. Any drop tests are difficult to use to determine durability in real-world conditions because the drop angle, height, and surface on which the iPhone is dropped will always be different.

Allstate has stopped immersion testing because the ‌iPhone&zwnj ; now have such reliable water resistance, and models ‌iPhone 16‌ continue to offer the same IP67 water resistance as previous models. Other YouTube videos test ‌iPhone 16‌ against drops, hammer blows, scratches and other damages for those interested.

‌AppleCare‌+ for ‌iPhone 16‌ and 16 Plus is $179 for two years or $8.99 per month, and for ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ and Pro Max is $199 or $9.99. With ‌AppleCare‌+ display replacement ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max costs $29, and without it – $379. A cracked rear glass replacement costs $29 with ‌AppleCare‌+ and $199 without it, and if both the front and back glass are cracked, it's $499 ($58 with ‌AppleCare‌+).
