The member for Sherbrooke, Christine Labrie, failed to be elected as co-spokesperson for Québec Solidaire.

It was the former member of Parliament for Rouyn-Noranda-Témiscamingue, Émilise Lessard-Therrien, who was chosen by party members by collecting 50.3% of the votes.

In the minutes following the announcement, Christine Labrie had tears in her eyes and appeared overall disappointed with the results.

Nevertheless, she was quick to rally around the new co-spokesperson, Emilise Lessard-Therrien.

I trust this woman. I hope that the people who supported me will get to know Émilise as I know her and will appreciate her too. I know that most of them will rally, said Christine Labrie just after the announcement.

What she will have to accomplish in the coming years will be difficult, very often, and she will be able to count on me.

She believes that the arrival of Émilise Lessard-Therrien could help attract more members in remote regions.

Christine Labrie has also highlighted how close the race was between the three candidates in the running. According to her, the fact that Émilise Lessard-Therrien does not sit in the National Assembly is one of the reasons that could have convinced members to support her.

Our members are intelligent, they found a way to get all three of us.

In his speech, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois extended his hand to the defeated candidates, Christine Labrie and Ruba Ghazal.

Thank you Christine, we need you for the continued, said Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois in his speech.

Émilise Lessard-Thierrien said in her victory speech: It's clearer than ever, Québec solidaire is the party of Quebec as a whole. The co-spokesperson who lives in Abitibi-Témiscamingue intends to carry the voice of the regions within Québec Solidaire.

In Estrie, this choice of QS members is welcomed with great openness.

The mayor of Saint-Camille, former QS candidate in Richmond, lined up behind Emilise Lessard-Therrien during the race.

It's a great victory for the regions, for rurality. This is an anchor that Québec Solidaire will seek, argues Philippe Pagé.

The election of Émilise is the entry through the great door of the regions.

A quote from Philippe Pagé, mayor of Saint-Camille

For his part, the president of the Federation of Municipalities of Quebec, Jacques Demers, qualifies the effects of this victory.

It's someone who knows the needs of one of the regions, but each region is still different. It will be an opportunity with a new spokesperson to explain to him what we need in the municipal world for all of Quebec, he specifies.

The defeat of the member for Sherbrooke, Christine Labrie, as co-spokesperson disappoints some Sherbrooke residents, while she is seen as a victory of the regions for others.
