In the fans of Deportivo Cali, the statements of coach Alfredo Arias did not fall well when he was eliminated in the South American Cup, after drawing 0-0 on Tuesday at the Palmaseca stadium against Tolima.
The Uruguayan helmsman acknowledged that the key was lost with the 3-0 achieved by the ‘vinotinto y oro’ team in Ibagué, which confirms his decision to present an alternate team that did not offer much resistance to those led by Hernán Torres.
Arias, who lately feels low tone, argued: “I think we were eliminated when we returned from Ibagué, it was very difficult for a team that practically does not receive goals like Tolima and that plays the defensive part very well to score three goals. We try anyway and there are always things to highlight; Today we were able to add minutes to Jhon (Vásquez) and it ended well. Gastón (Ramírez) continues to add a few minutes, we need him to get in shape, although we have not really been able to prepare him in the way we would have liked, but by playing and having him there. (Jorge) Arias was already at the bank and someone could have entered a few minutes. I think that some players who made their debut or who returned to play for a few minutes in the team, homegrown players, did very well and give us a taste of what they can offer in the future ”.
However, he considers that not everything was negative: “There are always things to highlight. For us, this elimination was not today, we already had it when we left Ibagué, we made many mistakes in that game, we put ourselves at a disadvantage very early and that condemned us ”.
Regarding whether the elimination was due to deficiencies in his team or the virtues of Tolima, he said: “There are always both in football and in the game there are deficiencies or errors and there are virtues. I never like to demean the rivals, on the contrary, I think that the rivals do things very well and I respect Tolima a lot, it is a team that has a way of playing and that paid off in this series. I think we did everything for the game, the cold numbers tell us that we did everything for the game, wanting to score a goal and then be able to put pressure on Tolima. But by failing to do so, by finishing 20 times on goal and not being able to score a goal in those times, it was conditioning that the defending team is easier to destroy and defend than the team that tries to convert and create. It is in all areas of life, it is more difficult to create than to destroy, in all ways ”.
Regarding the fact of using an alternate team, he pointed out that “you have to make decisions, sometimes you make them well and sometimes you make them poorly. Mine go through me, if they are wrong, they are mine. The decision was to put the team that believed it was better to play this game and that was fresher. And what could he give us in the game, open up the opponent in the first half and maybe score a goal. To later be able to give Jhon and Gastón minutes, include (Franco) Torres, to see if having a little weight up, we could unbalance. But I put the best team I could put on, I didn’t want to rest anyone for the next game. Those who did not play come with a fatigue: Menosse, Andrade, players who needed to recover ”.
With the League as the only competition in front, he spoke about what is coming next Saturday, in a tough and vital game against Nacional: “Now we have to focus on the local championship, on Nacional that is coming here. We have to win the points to qualify. And if you can tell that we won and focus on just one competition, it will be. But first you have to win, first you have to qualify, once we win, we’ll see ”.
