Social hygiene by Denis Côté will be presented in world premiere at the next Berlinale. This is the sixth appearance of a film by the Quebec filmmaker at this prestigious festival since Bestiary in 2012.
His thirteenth feature film will be presented in the competitive Encounters section, created in 2020 for “strong author signatures”.
Due to the pandemic, the 71st Berlinale will take place in two stages. From March 1 to 5, a section dedicated to the European market will take place. Social hygiene will be presented there during a private screening before a jury. Then, in June, a second part provides for public screenings.
Social hygiene is presented as the first “real” comedy of Denis Côté, who notably directed Wilcox, Directory of missing towns and Curling. The film was shot last August, completely independently.
The story recounts the peregrinations of Antoninus, described as “a philosopher and delinquent bon vivant” who abuses the kindness and patience of his wife Eglantine.
“He also terribly disappoints his sister Solveig. Busy to flee the tax collector Rose, who would like to put his hand to the collar, Antonin cannot shake his attraction and his desire for the beautiful Cassiopeia from his head. Bothered, Antonin must now find the right trick and the right word of apology to Aurore, one of his victims. Around these five women, Antonin gets bogged down ”, details the production.
Produced, written and directed by Denis Côté, the film stars Maxim Gaudette as Antoninus. Actresses Larissa Corriveau, Éléonore Loiselle, Kathleen Fortin, Evelyne Rompré and Eve Duranceau give her the answer.
Social hygiene should be released in Quebec later this year.
