Since July 24, Deadpool & Wolverine has been a hit in theaters. Recently, actor Channing Tatum returned to his presence in the feature film, and explained why Gambit was sometimes unintelligible.
Deadpool & Wolverine: Already a Billion
Last July 24 was marked by the release of Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters. The new Marvel blockbuster particularly won over fans thanks to the big return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. 7 years after retiring in Loganthe actor returns once again in the shoes of the clawed mutant.
Directed by Shawn Levy, the film has already made cinema history since it became the highest-grossing R-rated feature film of all time. As a reminder, an R-rated film is prohibited for children under 16 in the United States. In just one month of release, Deadpool & Wolverine has already grossed more than $1.1 billion in revenue, breaking the record previously held by Joker and its $1 billion in revenue.
The Gambit Case
You probably already know this, but Deadpool & Wolverine is full of cameos of all kinds. Among these many appearances, one of the most striking is undoubtedly that of Gambit. A cult mutant, Gambit was recently at the center of the series X-Men ’97. In live-action, this Cajun-accented anti-hero was played by Taylor Kitsch in 2009 in the forgettable X-Men Origins Wolverine.
For years, a Gambit movie was in production. Project led by Channing Tatum, this Gambit film passed through different hands including those of Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). Unfortunately for the actor, the project never came to fruition, and the idea fell into oblivion with the acquisition of Fox by Disney.
Shawn Levy therefore took advantage of Deadpool & Wolverine to give Channing Tatum a chance. Marvel Studios takes advantage of the feature film's script to put the actor in the shoes of the Cajun. The recipe works, the reference is crazy, the Marvel meta universe is only getting a little better.
Channing Tatum seems to be having a blast in Gambit's clothes. But as is often the case in a Deadpool film,Remy LeBeau is nevertheless ridiculed. Gambit, like many of his colleagues, is parodied. Shawn Levy stages a character with practically incomprehensible diction, with an accent that is hilarious.
During a recent interview with ComicBookMovie, Channing Tatum returned to this little specificity of his character:
ÇThat's Ryan. There was very little room for improvisation. But Gambit's Cajun dialect is very unique. I grew up in Mississippi and my dad is from New Orleans, so I'm used to a strong accent. There are certain little sounds that are very Cajun. But we actually wanted it to be somewhat unintelligible. It was kind of a joke.
Later in the interview, the interviewer asked Channing Tatum if he took the Gambit costume with him when he finished filming. Here's the actor's response:
I was too scared to ask. I usually steal the very last outfit I'm in for every movie, but I was too scared to do it for this one.
It's unclear what happened to Gambit at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine. It's possible that the famous mutant is still stuck in The Void. Which leaves a potential gateway for Channing Tatum to return to the role, possibly for the next two Avengers
