James Gunn: DC vs Marvel

In 2023, the films The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hammered the final nails into the coffin of the DC Extended Universe, launched ten years earlier with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. But Warner Bros. Discovery is not giving up and has handed over the reins of a new DC cinematic universe to director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), who had managed to convince audiences and critics with The Suicide Squad and its spin-off series Peacemaker. The filmmaker is undoubtedly aware of the immensity of the task he faces, and intends not to repeat the mistakes that led to audience fatigue with superhero productions..

In an interview with major American media outlet Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn revealed his ambitions for the DCU. “What I always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that were always running, but they also had these comics that were very different in tone likeWatchmen,The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman. It was different from Marvel in that way. That's something I really want to keep in the studio. That each project brings the unique vision of the artists behind it.

Of course, the comics that James Gunn cites are not insignificant: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons are considered masterpieces that changed the comic book industry forever. As for All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison, it is renowned as one of the best comics of the Man of Steel and served as the main inspiration for James Gunn's Superman film, scheduled for July 2025.

Moreover, the American director does not seem to share the vision of his main competitor, Kevin Feige, the great architect of the MCU. Indeed, while the films produced by Marvel Studios reflect the vision of its sole architect, at the risk of stifling creativity directors, James Gunn wants to give them greater freedom and propose projects that are different from each other. In this respect, the animated series Creature Commandos, scheduled for December 2024 on Max and supposed to open the DCU, therefore appears as a profession of faith. We can't wait!
