Curiosity of the day: in Dublin, 30 women taught a pregnant orangutan about motherhood

>> At Dublin Zoo, 30 women held “mothers' workshops” for 19-year-old pregnant orangutan Mudjur. She gave birth to a healthy monkey.

Some women even took off their T-shirts and bras so that Mudjur could better see the process. The Guardian writes about it.

Previously, Mudjur was not sufficiently attached to her babies, and they died shortly after birth. So when she became pregnant earlier this year, the zoo invited nursing mothers to try to show her how it's done.

Mujur found it extremely interesting to watch the women feed their babies through the glass. She even mirrored some of their actions, the zoo said. During feeding lessons, the orangutan house was closed to visitors.

One of the nurses, Nora Murphy, who taught Mudjur, decided it would be a great story to tell her daughter Elodie, who is now 10 months old.

You go from being mother, to trying to help another mother become a mother. You tell her, “Look, this is what you have to do,'' the woman said.

During the training, Mujur was also shown videos of other orangutans feeding their young. Already on July 31, she gave birth to a healthy baby monkey and demonstrated good maternal care for the baby. That is, the training made sense, but Mudjur did not hold the cub in the correct position during feeding.

Usually, the zoo allows the females to feed the babies on their own. However, due to the fact that orangutans are endangered and the baby's genetic profile, the zoo decided to bottle feed the baby.
