Curiosity of the day: an American swam 73 kilometers on a boat made of a giant pumpkin

An American sailed a boat/Guinness Book of Records

An American grew a huge pumpkin, made a boat out of it and sailed 73.5 kilometers along the Columbia River. His journey lasted 26 hours, which became an absolute record.

As recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, this is the longest journey on a pumpkin boat and a long-standing dream of 46-year-old Gary Christensen from Oregon.

The man has been growing giant pumpkins since 2011, and in recent years has been winning local swimming competitions with them.

This year, he grew a huge pumpkin: its circumference is 429.3 centimeters and it weighs 555 kilograms. This is the approximate weight of an adult camel or a grand piano.

Giant Pumpkin

In October 2024, Gary carved a boat out of a pumpkin and named it the Punky Loafster. He attached a camera to record his journey and wrote “It's true!” on the sides of the pumpkin boat to satisfy the curiosity of casual witnesses to his journey.

Gary later launched the Punky Loafster into the Columbia River near Hamilton Island in Washington State. A few hours into the trip, strong winds arose, so Gary stopped at Multnomah Falls for safety, then paddled all night.

A safe beach has been identified for pumpkin planting directly across the Columbia from Multnomah Falls. The landing was difficult because there was thick vegetation in the water, which did not allow the pumpkin to swim easily, the man recalls.

The man rested for only a few hours at dawn, and then continued his journey – and still set a world record. Gary says it was one of the most incredible adventures of his life.

At 7:03 a.m. the sun was rising and I found a safe place to land and rest on Hayden Island, he said. Harry.

The stop lasted about 5.5 hours, during which the man managed to sleep and eat. He then continued along the route, covering a total of 73.5 kilometers in his pumpkin boat.

With this, he broke the previous world record of 63 kilometers set in 2023.< /p>
