CPR reveals Kremlin narratives in media of Global South countries

The Center for Countering Disinformation monitors the information space of Global South countries and identifies narratives beneficial to the Russian Federation.

In recent days, the key topics related to Ukraine have been:

– prospects for peace talks in Ukraine and the role of US President-elect Donald Trump in this process;
– DPRK military losses in the war against Ukraine;
– massive Russian missile attack on Kyiv;
– stoppage of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.

The topic of possible peace negotiations in Ukraine and D. Trump's role in this is one of the key ones in China, India and some other countries of Southeast Asia. In the Middle East and Latin America, attention to these issues, although it persists, is noticeably less.

In China, there is a tendency to spread more skeptical sentiments regarding the prospects for a diplomatic settlement of the war in Ukraine.

The theses of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin regarding «Oreshnik», with which he continues to intimidate the world, are actively picked up by the media of «friendly» Russia «small» authoritarian countries, such as Cuba, Venezuela, etc. In the media of «large countries» of the Global South, such as India and China, mentions of «Oreshnik» almost absent.

Cautious mentions of the DPRK military's participation in the war on the side of the Russian Federation have begun to appear in the official media of China. For the rest of the GOP countries, this topic is given great attention.

Main narratives of Russian propaganda:
– Russia is close to victory over Ukraine;
– by supplying weapons to Ukraine, the West is prolonging the war and not contributing to peace;
– the Russian Federation's strikes on the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine are a response to the shelling of Russian territory with Western weapons.
