Ten inmates and one staff member contracted COVID-19 in the female sector of the Quebec City Detention Center, formerly known as the Orsainville prison.
This was confirmed by the CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale in Newspaper, Sunday.
According to the union of peace officers in correctional services of Quebec, a massive screening took place in the last days after the discovery of a positive prisoner, but asymptomatic.
The female sector has about thirty inmates.
In recent weeks, this is the third major outbreak in a detention center in the province after the prison of Saint-Jérôme and that of Bordeaux, in Montreal, reports the president of the union, Mathieu Lavoie.
Mr. Lavoie calls for the obligation for inmates to wear a mask in common areas, which is not currently the case.
“The incarcerated people have access to common areas without wearing a mask, so they do not impose it inside the common areas, only in the corridors”, affirms the president of the union. The Department of Public Security did not respond to our request for information on Sunday.
► The COVID-19 toll was up slightly in the Capitale-Nationale region on Sunday, with 39 new cases detected and seven new deaths.
