COP27: Delegation of Colombian communities arrived at the climate summit

This Sunday, November 6, in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt), the twenty-seventh version of the world summit on climate change begins Conference of the Parties (COP).At the environmental event, which will run until next Friday, November 18, Colombia will have a broad representation with leaders from various communities.

Colombian representatives accredited at COP27 are around 30 citizens with the participation of: young people (57%), indigenous people (27%), peasants, Afro-Colombians, Raizales and Palenqueros (14%) and social leaders (2%).

At the environmental meeting, these leaders will present their proposals to mitigate and prevent climate change and have them heard by world leaders. These were chosen in a concerted manner by associations and peoples, “which had never happened before in such an important world environment scenario,” said the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.

The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Susana Muhamad, will participate in the summit. Before traveling to the African country, he reiterated that these spaces should serve to increase the political capacity of the countries.

In his statements, he indicated that he will bring a proposal to mobilize action, regarding to the protection and preservation of the Amazon rainforest and other strategic ecosystems.

José Luis Rengifo Balanta will be one of the representatives of the communities that will be at COP27, the delegate of the black, Afro-Colombian, Raizales and Palenquero peoples, said:

“The Colombian State was right to bring, for the first time, ethnic peoples to this world summit. The message that I will take to the different scenarios has to do with the recognition of us as black peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean. This is an opening that will benefit the communities, but also the forests and natural resources,” said Rengifo

For her part, Ingrid Tatiana Fernández Cuy, youth representative said he was happy for the invitation and to be able to participate in the event and stressed that it is a positive response to a request made by the Ministry of Youth.

“It is an exercise in historical justice and an important acknowledgment to those of us who have not been taken into account. It makes me happy to be able to participate in COP27, because it is an achievement of wills that is related to what we hope will happen in these four years of government”, explained Fernández.

At COP27 , Colombia will also participate in the review of financing commitments assumed by the developed countries in front of those that are developing. At the same time, it will contribute to the discussions on how to jointly meet the long-term objectives set out in the Paris Agreement, such as, for example, that the planet does not exceed 1.5 º C.

It should be noted that COP27 is led by the United Nations Organization (UN), with the support of the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the host country, in this case Egypt.

In this space, according to official information, work will be carried out based on the results obtained at COP26, which was held in Glasgow (Scotland) in 2021, in order to articulate strategies to face the climatic emergency and follow up with the countries in the face of the reduction of greenhouse gases, the increase of resilience and the ad adaptation and mitigation to the consequences of climate change.
