Collins Dictionary named the main word of 2024: what does it mean

Word of the Year/Collins Dictionary

Collins British Dictionary has named “Brat” as the word of 2024. It combines many things in itself: hedonism, bright aesthetics and even the slogan of the campaign of the candidate for the US presidency from the Democrats Kamala Harris (Kamala IS Brat).

Brat is a confident, independent, daring person, which has a hedonistic attitude to life. This is stated on the Collins Dictionary website.

The word brat is associated with the British singer Charli XCX (real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison). Her sixth studio album, which was released in June, is called Brat. It gained popularity not only because of the originality of the songs, but also because of their remixes.

According to the singer, Brat is a girl , who is “anxious, but that's why she likes parties”, she is honest, open, “a little fickle”. Charli XCX said that a Brat is one of those with a pack of cigarettes, a Bic lighter and a white strapless top without a bra. The Brat aesthetic gained momentum on TikTok over the summer, where brat girl summer is seen as a rejection of other trends.

Inspired by Charli XCX's album, brat became one of the most talked about words of 2024. It's not just an extremely successful album, but a cultural phenomenon that resonated with people all over the world, and brat summer has established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life, explained the compilers of the Collins dictionary.
