CNN changes format after Trump inauguration, lays off hundreds of employees

The American television channel CNN, owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, plans to lay off hundreds of employees in connection with a change in its broadcasting format. CNBC reports this, citing informed sources.

The layoffs come as companies shift from linear television to digital subscription products. According to sources, the cuts will help CNN reduce production costs and consolidate teams.

Some programs filmed in New York or Washington could be moved to Atlanta, where it is likely to be cheaper.

Most of the cuts will not affect CNN's most famous anchors. In total, the channel employs about 3,500 people worldwide.

During a general meeting in early January, CNN CEO Mark Thompson said that the media company had received an investment of more than $70 million from Warner Bros. Discovery to fund the company's digital projects.

Part of the investment will go to hiring employees in areas where CNN sees potential growth, such as data analysts and technology developers.

NBC News is also planning layoffs, according to sources. The jobs are likely to be fewer than 50 employees.

Both news organizations waited until the inauguration of US President Donald Trump to begin the cuts.

The news media landscape is in a transition phase, as fewer people watch linear television and more consume news through streaming services and social media.
