China has tightened controls on exports of dual-use goods after US sanctions

The Chinese government has released export control rules for so-called dual-use goods. The rules come amid increased U.S. sanctions against Chinese companies that supply dual-use goods, such as drones, to aid Russia in its war against Ukraine, CNBC notes.

The measures, which will take effect on Dec. 1, aimed at “protecting national security and interests, promoting global non-proliferation cooperation, strengthening and standardizing export controls on dual-use items”.

On October 17, the US Treasury Department added two Chinese companies to its sanctions list, claiming that they are involved in the production of Russian long-range strike drones “Harpy”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China called on the US “to immediately stop using the Ukraine issue to discredit and pressure China, as well as indiscriminately introduce illegal unilateral sanctions against Chinese legal and physical people”.

In July, China already announced the introduction of a ban on the export of all civilian drones that can be used for military purposes from September 1.

This happened after Beijing visited the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, who asked not to help Moscow in circumventing sanctions.
