China supports Iran in defending its “sovereignty, security and national dignity.”
This was stated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in a telephone conversation with Acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani, Reuters reports.
The diplomat once again condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, saying that the strike violated Iran's sovereignty and threatened regional stability.
Recall that Iran and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas accused Israel of carrying out the attack that killed Haniyeh. Israel has not claimed or denied responsibility for the killing, raising concerns that the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip could escalate into a wider conflict in the Middle East.
Iran has vowed to “severely punish” Israel for the killing. Wang Yi said that Haniyeh's killing “directly undermined the Gaza ceasefire talks and undermined regional peace and stability.”
“China supports Iran in upholding its sovereignty, security and national dignity in accordance with the law, as well as in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and is willing to maintain close contact with Iran,” the Chinese Foreign Minister said.
