Even if Laurent Duvernay-Tardif will not be at the Super Bowl this year, the family bakery is already preparing its “salty squares” in honor of the star player of the Chiefs, who is conspicuous by his absence.
“It was such a great event last year. We want to do that again. We are behind the team. We think of the Chiefs. It’s Laurent’s team again, even if he’s not there and he decided to go and help people who needed it in CHSLDs, ”says Newspaper his friend Florent Fernandez, co-owner of the bakery Le pain dans les voiles, in Montreal.
Last year, the family bakery of Duvernay-Tardif offered a “salty square” with bacon, red onions, Swiss cheese, crème fraîche and chives in honor of the first Quebecer in the region. regular Super Bowl roster in 14 years.
And in the final game, the Kansas City Chiefs snatched the victory from the San Francisco 49ers in Miami, which was the consecration for the athlete here, who marked Quebec history.
However, this year, despite its absence, the family bakery is already active at its branches in Montreal, Mont-Saint-Hilaire and Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville to prepare products bearing the image of the Chiefs.
“We’re giving away ‘Super Bowl pizza’ to give a nod to last year. We are going to make small individual pizzas and red and white stuffed chouquettes in the colors of Kansas City and breads with the team logo, ”continues Florent Fernandez, co-owner of the brand in Montreal.
For him, this Super Bowl takes on a special character because he has barely been working in his friend’s bakery for six months.
“I met Laurent when I was a butler at Pied de Cochon. We became friends before he was known. We had the same passions around food and good living, ”he says.
Little by little, the two men became friends and the NFL player asked him to come and take care of the family business in Montreal.
When we asked Florent Fernandez if he was inspired by Pig’s Foot in the kitchen, he burst out laughing before answering no.
“There was no inspiration from Pig’s Foot. I didn’t put foie gras in the buns, ”he jokes.
