Difficult start to the year for the British royal family: King Charles III will undergo an operation next week for a “benign” enlarged prostate, while Princess Kate was hospitalized for at least 10 days after an operation abdominal.

The two pieces of information were made public in quick succession on Wednesday by the services of the British monarchy.

At 75, Charles III, head of state of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth countries, including Canada, will, for the first time since his accession to the throne in September 2022, put his agenda on hold, heavy in public commitments, for a stay in the hospital of an unspecified duration.

Like thousands of men each year, the king consulted for an enlarged prostate. Her Majesty's condition is benign and she will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure.

His public engagements will be postponed for a short period to allow him to recover, it is specified.

Since the death of Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96, the sovereign has followed a very busy schedule for inaugurations with charitable associations or on the diplomatic front, traveling to Germany, France, Kenya or the COP28 climate conference, or receiving foreign heads of state.

According to the British press, Charles' future hospitalization was revealed because he had to cancel receptions planned for Thursday and Friday in Scotland. And the details of the diagnosis, unusual for the monarchy, would have been made public to encourage men to get tested.

Prostate enlargement is a very common pathology in men of a certain age and which, if left untreated, can lead to a progressive deterioration in bladder function as well as urinary infections.

The royal services were more vague on the cause of the hospitalization Tuesday of Kate, the wife of the heir to the throne William.

The Princess of Wales was admitted to the London Clinic yesterday [Tuesday] for elective abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace announced in a statement. The surgery was successful and she is expected to stay in the hospital for 10 to 14 days.

Based on current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties before Easter on March 31, Kensington Palace warns, demanding that her personal medical information remain confidential.

No indication n& #x27;was provided on the reasons for the princess's hospitalization in a high-end clinic in the upscale district of Marylebone where several members of the royal family, such as the late Prince Philippe, husband of Elizabeth II.

According to several British media, Kate, whose last public appearance dates back to Christmas, does not suffer from cancer.

According to the Timesher husband William also gave up several of his public commitments to stay by her side as much as possible. The Prince of Wales could thus cancel a visit to Rome.

The couple, who have three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, reside in a private property in Windsor, west London.

Nothing predestined Kate Middleton, a commoner, to this royal life. Her mother, a flight attendant, and her father, an air traffic controller, then made their fortune by starting a party supplies company.

Sa meeting with William at the Scottish University of St. Andrews, which she joined in 2001 to study art history, decided otherwise.

They married in 2011 at Westminster Abbey. Smiling, elegant and exercising a power of fascination, she has established herself over the years as an essential figure.

The British press considers her as a model member of the monarchy, seeing her as the polar opposite of her sister-in-law Meghan Markle, married to Harry, William's younger brother.
