Convincing in its qualifying group, the French team now entered the heart of the matter to defend its title. Opposed to a Polish team which has not been flamboyant so far, the poster looked largely favorable for the Blues, at least on paper. The armada Griezmann, Mbappé, Dembélé and Giroud had to afford the Białe Orły of Lewandowski at all costs to take a first step in the preservation of his title of World Champion.

Quickly, the Blues entered this round of 16 very well, with a Dembélé on fire. The Barcelonian was the first to put danger (11th), before a missile from Tchouaméni narrowly deflected by Szczęsny (14th). Definitely in good shape on the right side, Dembélé projected himself and sent a perfect cross towards Giroud … too short (29th). An opportunity that the Blues regretted, because Poland then entered a highlight, with a triple chance deflected by Lloris, then Varane on his line (39th).

France provides the essentials

The French team then began to doubt, but at the best of times, Mbappé slipped a marvel for Giroud, who won his duel ahead of Szczęsny to lead in the score and become the top scorer in the history of Les Bleus, with 52 goals (1 -0, 45th). The hardest part was done before returning to the locker room, but then it was necessary to ensure qualification in the second half. And on returning from the locker room, the Blues had gained the upper hand and multiplied the breakthroughs towards a Polish defense much less serene than in the first period.

Olivier Giroud even thought of scoring with a sublime return, but an offside position was signaled (58th). No worries for the Blues, very solid defensively, in particular thanks to an omnipresent Griezmann. And on a Polish attack, it was the Colchonero who offered a decisive clearance towards Giroud. The Milan striker transmitted to Dembélé, who offered a nice pass to Mbappé for the goal of the break, with a nice curl (2-0, 75th). Before a sublime curling strike to clean the skylight of Szczęsny and afford a double (3-0, 89th). Qualification was assured at the end of a successful match and a penalty converted by Lewandowski could only console Poland (3-1, 90th + 7). The Blues will therefore see the quarter-finals, quietly watching England-Senegal, to know their opponent.
