Eddy Merckx reached: in Carcassone (13 stage of the Tour de France 2021) Mark Cavendish he won his 34th stage in the Grande Boucle, reaching the top of the list with the greatest of all with a feat until recently considered impossible. Chaotic sprint, very nervous: at 200 meters from the finish the Englishman, facing the last corner, had lost the wheel of the impeccable Deceuninck train that had released the counterattack Filippo Ballerini. Cav, 36, forged his way zigzagging through his opponents, not skimping on his shoulders, and killed them in the last 50 meters with an irresistible progression.
The enterprise of the former world champion is unbelievable if we consider that Merckx has scrapped his time trial successes, in the mountains, in the plains (winning five Tours) while Mark has succeeded by exploiting only the sprints. Its progression began in the 2008 edition with four successes, reached the top in 2009 with six, stopped for the first time in 2014 and then – for a long time – from 2017 to this year.
A Cavendish (which first will have to beat the maximum time in the Pyrenees) now there are two stops (the third to last and the last in Paris) to set a record that can hardly be beaten in the future. Pogacar (very isolated, his non-existent Emirates) remains in yellow on the eve of the great mountains.
