CATL has successfully tested a 4-ton electric aircraft with advanced battery technology

CATL, the world's leading battery manufacturer for electric vehicles, has successfully tested a 4-ton electric aircraft powered by its advanced ultra-high energy density battery – of up to 500 Wh/kg per cell.

In In April at the Shanghai Auto Show, CATL presented its new condensed battery, which demonstrates an impressive energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg per cell. This innovation promises to revolutionize the electrification of passenger aircraft.

Working in collaboration with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), CATL last summer established an aviation division to design and develop civil aircraft and components, including engines and propellers.

Testing electric aircraft

The recent successful test flight of a 4-ton electric aircraft demonstrates the rapid progress of CATL. Company Chairman Robin Yuqin announced plans to launch an 8-ton commercial electric aircraft with a range of 2,000-3,000 km by 2027 or 2028.

He confirmed that this aircraft will use CATL's new high-density battery, making it viable for long-haul flights and suitable for private and business jets.

Not about cars forgot

In addition to aviation, CATL is advancing its battery technology by developing next-generation sodium-ion batteries. These batteries promise lower cost, longer life and improved performance at low temperatures, and could potentially be on the market as early as next year. According to Zeng, these new batteries have already achieved a 7 on CATL's performance scale of 1 to 10.

CATL continues to lead the EV battery market with a market share of more than 37%, according to South Korean research firm SNE Research. % of the market in the first four months of 2024.

To support its growth, CATL plans to expand its global presence with two additional overseas plants in addition to the six already planned in Germany, Thailand, Hungary, Indonesia and two in the US in partnership with Ford and Tesla.
