Canada deplored Sunday “the mass detentions and the use of force” during the demonstrations in Russia in favor of the release of the opponent Alexeï Navalny.

“Canada is deeply concerned about the mass detentions and the use of force against protesters and journalists in Russia,” said Canadian foreign minister Marc Garneau in a tweet.
“We urge Russia to release those detained, to respect its international commitments and to protect press freedom,” the minister added.
Russian police carried out more than 4,800 arrests and blocked the center of several cities, including Moscow, during new demonstrations across the country demanding the release of Alexey Navalny.
