Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday that his government is considering imposing sanctions against “extremist” Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, where violence has increased significantly amid the war in the Gaza Strip.

We're looking at how to hold those responsible for extremist violence or extreme settler violence in the West Bank to account. We are considering sanctions against extremist settlers.

In an interview with the daily The Globe and Mail, the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, agreed, affirming that a decision will be made in the coming weeks.

These statements comes a day after the United States decided to impose sanctions against four settlers accused of attacks or acts of terrorism against Palestinians, or of actions that undermine peace, stability and security in the territory occupied by Israel.

The situation in the West Bank, particularly high levels of extremist settler violence, forced displacement of people and villages and destruction of property, has reached intolerable levels and poses a serious threat to the peace, security and stability of West Bank, Gaza, Israel and the Middle East region, US President Joe Biden wrote in an executive order.

The sanctioned settlers are now banned from entering the United States and their assets will be frozen, American officials told AFP.

At the beginning of December, the United States had already announced visa restrictions against extremist Israeli settlers, but these are first financial sanctions.

The Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu has ardent defenders of colonization, including the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, leader of the far-right Jewish Force party.

Reacting to the American decree, Mr. Netanyahu said he believed there was no room for sanctions against Israeli settlers, affirming that the majority of these settlers are respectful citizens of the law.

The West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 by Israel, has been shaken by a resurgence of violence since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the unprecedented attack of this Palestinian Islamist movement on Israeli territory on October 7.

According to the Palestinian Authority, at least 364 Palestinians have been killed since then by Israeli soldiers or settlers in the West Bank.

More than 2.9 million Palestinians live in the West Bank occupied, separated from the Gaza Strip by Israeli territory. And around 490,000 Israelis also live there, in settlements deemed illegal under international law.
