Brooke Shieldsrevealed that she was raped when she was in her early 20s. The actress, now 57, recounted details of the attack in her new documentary, Pretty Baby, which explores the abuse of vulnerable young people in Hollywood.

In the documentary, which premiered last Friday at the Sundance Film Festival, Shields does not name her assailant, but details the facts of a sexual assault that occurred shortly after graduating from Princeton University, during a period when she was struggling to find work after her early success as a child actress.

As detailed by Entertainment Weekly, Shields arranged a dinner work with whom she would become her aggressor and agreed to go up to her hotel room to call a taxi to take her home.

“'Come back to the hotel with me and I'll call a cab,'” Shields explains the man told him. However, once there the nightmare began. “I go up to the hotel room and he disappears for a while.”

Shields, feeling uncomfortable in a room that wasn't her own, decided to use a pair of binoculars the man had left in the room and watched some volleyball players through the window. “The door opens and he comes out naked. I was with the binoculars, when I put them down, I already had it on me ”

Continuing her story, Shields explained that he did not attempt to flee because he was afraid of provoking more physical violence. “I was afraid I was going to suffocate or something,” she says . “So I didn't fight as much. I did not do it. I was totally paralyzed. I thought that a 'No' would have been enough, and she repeated to me: 'I have to get out of here alive', and I kept quiet. God knows he knew how to disassociate me from my body. I had practiced that…. I went down in the elevator and took my own taxi. I cried all the way to my friend's apartment.”

The actress didn't even process the experience as sexual assault for a long time. Even when pointed out by her security specialist Gavin de Becker. “He told me: 'That's rape.' And I told her: 'I'm not willing to believe it,'” she says.

Shields naturalized atrocities since she was little, when she became a child star: she appeared naked and kissing a 29-year-old Keith Carradine in the 1978 film Pretty Baby (which gives the documentary its title) when he was only 11 years old. At 15, she appeared in two more movies, Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, which featured sex and nudity.

The documentary makes it clear that, even with that record, Shields felt guilty about the abuse. “That's what I had to do to my brain,” she admits. “It's pathetic. He believed that somehow he was sending out a message and that was how the message was received. I drank wine at dinner. I went up to the room. She was so confident…”

“I wanted to erase everything from my mind and body and continue on the path I was on. The system had not come to my aid even once. So I had to make myself stronger.”

Shields has already discussed her sexualization in Hollywood in two memoirs, but this is the first time she has revealed details of a rape.
