Britain will join the European initiative to develop a long-range missile

The Minister of Defense of Great Britain, John Geely, announced that London will join the initiative of European countries to develop a long-range missile.

This is reported by “European Pravda ” with reference to Reuters.

On the sidelines of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels on Thursday, October 17, Gehly announced the “UK commitment to the long-range missile program”, which was agreed by Germany, France, Poland and several other countries.

He did not elaborate on the range of the planned weapon or other details, saying those issues have yet to be resolved.

“These long-range weapons are comparable to what many of us already have and can use,” – said the British minister, adding that the initiative is also part of NATO's efforts to strengthen its own deterrence and defense of Europe.

It will be recalled that at the July summit of the Alliance in Washington, France, Germany, Italy and Poland signed a letter of intent to develop missiles with a range of more than 500 kilometers.

At that time it was unofficially reported that it was a new land-based cruise missile with a flight range from 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers, which should satisfy NATO's needs for such means.

Long-range missiles began to be actively discussed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when Moscow used them to destroy Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.

Currently, long-range capabilities in Europe are primarily represented by missiles launched by fighter jets – the British Storm Shadow, the French Scalp and the German Taurus with a flight range of about 500 kilometers.

In addition, during the NATO summit in Washington, it became known that the USA and Germany agreed on the placement of long-range Tomahawk missiles in Germany with in order to strengthen the deterrence and protection of its partners in the Alliance.
