Britain has completely abandoned coal in the production of electricity. Closed the last TPP

Britain has closed the last power plant in the country that worked on coal. This is reported by the BBC.

Thus, Great Britain has become the first industrialized country to abandon the use of coal for electricity generation.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire will completely stop working today , September 30, and after decommissioning, which will last two years, it will be demolished.

Construction of the TPP began in 1963, the first power unit was put into operation four years later, the station produced electricity for 57 years. Since 1967, 141,768 trainloads of coal have been delivered to Ratcliffe, with the last shipment taking place on 28 June 2024.

The power station could power 2 million households. At its peak, it employed 3,000 workers around the clock.

Britain began phasing out coal in electricity generation from the early 2000s, when air quality requirements increased. Coal was gradually replaced by cheaper gas and wind power.

By 2035, Great Britain wants to design the structure of electricity generation in such a way that almost no CO2 is emitted in production. The new government is in favor of expanding solar energy production. It should also be possible to build wind farms again in rural areas. At the same time, large electricity storage projects are being developed in Britain. It is planned that the largest storage facility in the world will be built near Manchester.
