BMW never jokes when it comes to the M5. The new edition launched for 2021 generates 600 horsepower, while the M5 Competition – the only version offered in Canada – deploys 617 horsepower.
Did you think the German manufacturer was going to stop there? Think again. Introducing the new and extreme M5 CS 2022, the most powerful production BMW vehicle in history!
Indeed, the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 has been revised to unleash nothing less than 627 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. The torque of 553 lb-ft does not change, but it is fully accessible over a slightly wider rev range, from 1,800 to 5,950 rpm. The red zone begins at 7,200 revolutions / minute.
Engineers also lightened the car by 230 pounds, including the increased use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. As a result, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes exactly three seconds – three tenths less than the M5 Competition – and acceleration from 0 to 200 km / h takes 10.3 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 305 km / h.
By the way, power is controlled by a programmable eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission and an M xDrive all-wheel drive system that normally favors the rear wheels. Torque is also distributed between the left and right rear wheels for maximum grip and control when cornering. 4WD Sport and 2WD modes are even available.
The chassis settings are even sharper than those of the M5 Competition, especially in the area of the springs and the dynamic damping control system, to take account of the reduced weight and the optional high performance Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. What about the 20-inch M rims with their golden bronze finish? Superb!
Naturally, it is possible for the driver to adjust all the parameters to their liking via the 12.3-inch central screen and create profiles which will be accessible simply by pressing the red M1 and M2 buttons attached to the steering wheel. The display can also be adjusted according to the information you want to appear. In Track mode, it’s not just the driving aids that turn off: the audio system and center display turn off to minimize distractions.
What else? Well, as you will have noticed, there are different gilded bronze trims on the outside. Carbon-ceramic brakes are 51 pounds lighter and stronger, while their calipers include six pistons up front and are painted red or gold (your choice).
Inside, this is the first time that a BMW M5 has adopted four seats, with M sport seats in carbon with very pronounced lateral support at the front and two individual seats at the rear. On all the headrests there is the layout of the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, a nice touch reminiscent of where the car was developed. We also note the red stitching and trim, the M sport steering wheel trimmed in Alcantara suede and the illuminated “M5 CS” emblems.
The 2022 BMW M5 CS will go on sale for a single model year starting in the second half of 2021. The Canadian price is set at $ 165,900.
